Designing for the Built Environment
Engineers and architects create some of the most amazing things... bridges that soar over vast rivers, buildings both beautiful and beautifully functional, systems that treat and distribute our drinking water and that handle our waste.
Designing web sites for A/E firms can be interesting indeed. And since both Lisa and I spent a number of years working in the A/E industry before we began our own firm, we bring both an insider’s and an outsider’s view to the work.
We began working with SELLS in 1994 when SELLS & HNTB were pursuing the preliminary design of the Cross Westchester Expressway in New York State.
Bridging Past and Present || The largest firm we work with currently is SELLS, an East Coast firm with offices that stretch from New Hampshire to South Carolina. SELLS – which is well known as one of the Northeast’s premier bridge design firms – also is one of our oldest clients, having worked with them when we were still managing HNTB’s New Media Group, and then getting our first project from them when we formed Yulan Studio.
SELLS most recent version of its web site began life as a multimedia CD. We had developed the business card-sized CD for SELLS to use for tradeshows and marketing. Then, they decided they would like to have it adapted to become their web site.
Providing the Needed Solutions ||
Other A/E firms we’ve provided marketing communications solutions to include Missouri’s Larkin Group, an environmental and aquatics engineering firm and Kansas’ Affinis Corp., a transportation engineering firm. In addition to designing Affinis’ web site, we have worked with them to develop several public information web sites for Affinis projects.
Our most recent A/E project has been our work with Stroud Engineers, a civil and mechanical/electrical firm located in North Carolina. Stroud needs a web site that tells their story – reputable firm, good projects, and a chance to live on the beautiful North Carolina coast if you want to work for them. Sadly, no trips to said coast are in the project budget.
